The town of Caldes was, in Roman times, a thermal station founded on the spring of hot water that flows. The primordial function of this group was to cure the innumerable patients who arrived at the place from different points of Roman Hispania. The building that is contemplated in the Plaça de la Font del Lleó, is only a small part of the great thermal complex that was in the time of the Romans. This complex was extended, at least, by the Old Hospital, a large part of the Rius and Broquetas spas and the current Plaça de la Font del Lleó. Today, 15 areas of this Roman thermal complex have already been located.
